Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Lead Adrian Barrowdale explains the importance of HCPC’s new approach to gathering registrants’ equality and diversity information.

The Health and Care Professions Council is committed to embedding the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion in everything that we do – from our regulatory activities to our actions as an employer.

To do this, we need to have a clearer picture of our registrants so that we can understand how what we do, and the decisions that we take, impact on you.

To that end, we are introducing a new section for you to record equality and diversity information in your online account.

Read more about how to use this new section here

Previously, we relied on separate survey exercises to produce our EDI registrant reports, and we are grateful to those who contributed to these. With our new portal you can enter your data much more easily, as well as change it whenever you need to.

If you complete this section as soon as you can and keep it up to date, over time we will build a hugely important pool of data that will help us, and the professions we regulate, ensure equality and fairness is at the heart of everything we do.

Access to this information will be restricted to staff, contractors and researchers involved in the processing, monitoring and analysis of this data. It will be used to provide statistical and analytical information.

Our approach to all of this, and more, is covered in detail in our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy. In addition, we will also be setting out our new EDI action plan in the coming months. This information will play an important role in supporting equality and also healthcare across the UK – it will allow us to understand if there are any groups who are more likely to be affected by our processes than others, or more likely than others to leave the register. When we know this, we can take appropriate action and work with others in the system to understand why.

The launch of this section of the online account is a key step in the process of making HCPC as inclusive a regulator as we can be, and an exciting opportunity for you to influence the future direction of HCPC.
