About consultations

How we consult and how to get involved

Consultations form a key part of our internal decision making process. We consult on the standards and guidance that we publish, alongside key policy decisions that we make.

The consultation process

We typically consult around 3-5 times a year, on topics ranging from revisions to our standards, to wider policy changes such as our registration fees.

As part of our commitment to meeting good practice, we follow the Government Consultation Principles.

Our consultations typically run for 12 weeks. During this time, we accept responses by email, post, and via an online SurveyMonkey survey.

When a consultation is live, it will go up on our open consultations page. During a consultation, this will be publicised via our social media, external events, the website and our newsletter, HCPC In Focus.

Each consultation’s page will contain the following information:

  • A summary of the consultation topic
  • How long the consultation will run for
  • How to respond
  • A link to the consultation document (this sets out the background to the particular consultation, provides details on the proposals we are consulting on, and sets out the consultation questions)

Once a consultation is closed, the responses received are analysed by the Policy and Standards department. These responses are used to form our final decisions. A summary of these responses is presented alongside any decisions we make in light of a consultation. This summary goes through all of the applicable committees and Council before being published on the consultations’ page within closed consultations on the website.
