The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) has written to Registrants, inviting them to take part in a United Kingdom Research Study into Ethnicity and COVID-19 Outcomes in Healthcare Workers (UK-REACH).

This is an important and urgent public health study, funded by the UK Government, to help understand why people from certain ethnic minorities are more likely to have severe COVID-19.

Led by the University of Leicester, with several other UK universities, HCPC along with 6 other healthcare regulators supports this study. We encourage all Registrants to consider taking part.

The study will look at COVID-19 outcomes in people of different ethnicities working in health and social care, and how these relate to working conditions, job types, and general health and living circumstances. Findings will be used to make rapid recommendations to the Government to protect health and social care workers.

Increasing fairness equality, diversity and inclusion across the professions is something HCPC is committed to enhancing. In order to increase understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) among HCPC Registrants, HCPC will launch its MyEDI campaign. As part of this, Registrants are being encouraged to complete an online survey, to help the HCPC create strategies, policies and procedures which are inclusive and representative.

Since last year, the HCPC have has pushed for a stronger focus on EDI, with the development of a strategy to engage all stakeholders on these issues. The organisation has also created an EDI Forum, which guides HCPC on a range of relevant issues and concerns, including a series of initiatives for Black History Month this year.
