HCPC appoints new Council members, at critical moment for health and care professionals

31 Ion 2023

The HCPC has today announced the appointment of two new lay Council members, John McEvoy and Lianne Patterson.

They join the HCPC at a time when health and care professionals are facing immense pressures and challenges. The two new members bring with them vast experience and expertise, that reflects the diverse roles they have had.

John served a full career in the armed forces and worked for the United Nations before embarking on a career in primary care. For 20 years, he was a non-medical partner in a GP partnership. John commented on his appointment:

“Through my role in a GP partnership, I have a deep understanding of the vitally important services provided day in day out by frontline health and care professionals, and not only doctors and nurses. I am passionate about the pivotal role they play in our communities.

Living in Scotland has given me a unique perspective on some of the specific challenges faced by rural health and care professionals. I look forward to bringing these insights to the HCPC and supporting the important work of HCPC registrants across the 15 different professions.”

Lianne is a Chartered Accountant, and joined the Northern Ireland Civil Service in 2005, largely focusing on justice and education matters. She is currently a Non-Executive Director of the Housing Finance Agency in Ireland and Chair of its Audit Committee. She is also an Audit Committee member of the Institute of Cancer Research, London. Lianne said:

“This is a crucial time for health and care professionals, with many challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic still lingering, and critical decisions still to be made on regulatory reform and workforce planning.

Becoming a member of the Council is a great privilege. I look forward to playing my part in supporting HCPC registrants to provide high quality care and contributing to protecting patients across the four nations.”

Christine Elliott, Chair of the HCPC added:

“I’m thrilled to welcome Lianne and John to the Council. I am confident that the depth and diversity of experience they bring will prove invaluable.

They join us at a truly exciting time for the HCPC, as we embark on the next phase of our improvement programme, and I’m looking forward to the unique perspectives they will both bring to our decision making.”

As per the HCPC’s processes for new Council members, the appointments have received approval from the Privy Council.
