What the updated standards of proficiency mean for students

The updated standards come into effect on 1 September 2023 and will apply to all individuals on the HCPC Register.

It is each registrant’s responsibility to ensure that they meet the standards of proficiency, as far as they relate to their scope of practice.

If you started a UK approved programme before 1 September 2023, your education or training will have been delivered according to the previous standards of proficiency. If you started on or after 1 September 2023, your education or training will be delivered according to the updated standards.

Students who started their programme before 1 September 2023

If you started a UK approved programme before 1 September 2023 and wish to join the HCPC Register, you may need to undertake some targeted continuing professional development (CPD) activities. These will not form part of your application for registration.

These should be focused on ensuring you can meet the new standards, as far as they relate to your scope of practice. To do this, we recommend following the simple steps below.

How to ensure you meet the updated standards

1. Read up on the changes

You can access comparison tables to view the changes for your profession, or read the full standards of proficiency if you prefer. (There are also some helpful resources available, including recordings of webinars on the key changes.) You may also wish to join the professional body for your profession, to access their support provision.

2. Gap analysis and reflection

Take a look at the HCPC’s gap analysis tool. This can be a useful first step in reflecting on the key areas of the updates and identifying the areas in which you may need to focus some activities.

3. Discussion and research

Discuss your findings with peers and other members of your course. Conduct research into appropriate courses, e-learning modules or resources, either independently and jointly. You may find that others have resources to hand that will fit your needs perfectly.

4. Action and reflection

Undertake the activities you have identified and keep a record of your experiences. Reflect on your learning, any takeaways and how you might adapt your practice in future. Consider whether there are other activities you may undertake in future.

Students who start their programme after 1 September 2023

If you start your UK approved education or training programme on or after 1 September 2023, your education provider will ensure that it will be aligned with the updated standards of proficiency. You will not need to undertake independent work or CPD to ensure you meet the updated standards.
