“Registrants must understand the legal context relevant to supplementary and independent prescribing, including controlled drugs”
Standards for prescribing (1.2)
Some of the professions we regulate can gain an entitlement to prescribe medicines and exempt professions can sell, supply or administer medicines by completing an approved education and training programme. If you provide one of these programmes, it is important that you consider where you need to update programme information relating to the prescription or sale, supply and administration of medicines.
You can find a list of controlled drugs and medicines that exempt professions can sell, supply or administer on our new website. You will also find guidance on the scope of practice for registrants with medicine entitlements and FAQs.
The law around medicines changes frequently. For updates about national controlled drugs in governance in England, sign up to Care Quality Commission (CQC)'s newsletter.
