Review of the standards of education and training

17 Sep 2024

We are undertaking a review of the standards of education and training (SETs).

These standards set out what education providers must do to prepare learners for professional practice.

To support our review, we are seeking participants for expert panels on the following topics:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI);
  • Simulation in learning;
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI); and
  • Different models of learning.

The expert panels will focus on reviewing the content of the standards and provide advice on those standards in relation to their subject area.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI is being increasingly used in health and care across the UK, including in the use of image analysis, diagnostics and risk monitoring. In education, artificial intelligence is also being increasingly used by learners and education providers. We would like views around the use of AI in education, particularly around how education providers can continue to maintain academic integrity, supporting staff and learners to become AI literate, including the risks and benefits, and how education providers cover emerging technology within practice as part of programme curricula.

Simulation in learning

Simulation in clinical education provides an important opportunity for learners to develop or enhance their knowledge and skills in a simulated environment. Whilst it has become more commonplace since the Covid-19 pandemic, it has been around in health and care education for a long time.

We would be interested hearing your views on any changes relating to simulation-based education.

Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI)

EDI has been a key consideration in the review of our other Standards – the standards of proficiency and the standards of conduct, performance and ethics. Both reviews resulted in significant changes relating to better supporting EDI in health and care.

We would like to hear views from education providers to understand how they ensure equality, diversity, and inclusion in their programmes. This will help us to identify best practice and, where needed, update the SETs appropriately.

Different models of learning

Apprenticeships and earn and learn routes are an increasingly common and popular route into health and care professions across the UK. We are seeking an expert panel who will identify and provide views on the challenges with the Standards in relation to these routes, as well as other routes of learning such as portfolio based, employer led, and non-HEI programmes.
