Updated standards of proficiency: now in effect

01 Sep 2023

Today, 1 September 2023, the HCPC updated standards of proficiency come into effect. It is now every registrant’s responsibility to meet the updated standards, as far as they relate to their scope of practice.

If you’re a registrant, you do not need to complete any new registration processes on 1 September 2023 to remain on the Register. There is no need to submit evidence of how you meet the updated standards outside of a normal CPD audit. If you are selected for CPD audit, we’ll contact you at the beginning of your renewal window.

The standards of proficiency are the threshold (entry level) standards all HCPC registrants must meet in order to join, and remain on, the HCPC Register. The updates were made after extensive consultation with a range of stakeholders to ensure they reflect the reality of practising in today’s healthcare landscape.

Information and support

Registrants

We have a range of support available for registrants considering the adaptations or changes they may need to make. Get started by viewing comparison tables of the updates, then browse our resources on the key changes. These include a gap analysis tool that can help guide your continuing professional development activities and inform your learning and development plans in future. Many registrants will be meeting the updated standards in their practice already.

Employers or managers of HCPC-registered staff

If you employ or manage HCPC-registered staff, you’ll want to be familiar with the standards to ensure you can support your staff. Head to the Employer Hub to view our employer-specific support.

International applicants

If you’re an international applicant, please note that applications submitted from today onwards will be assessed against the updated standards of proficiency for your profession. Our other requirements, including English language proficiency requirements, have not changed.

If you’re a UK applicant, you’ll need to confirm you meet the updated standards of proficiency for your profession in order to join the Register.

Students

If you’re a student wondering how the changes impact you, this will differ depending on when you began your course. Read more on What the updated standards mean for students

All stakeholders

If you have questions about the updated standards we encourage you to contact us, your professional body or union, or your employer.
