Are you a registrant with a prescribing annotation? The Royal Pharmaceutical Society need your views.

08 Apr 2021

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has launched a consultation on the updated competency framework for all prescribers.

Since September 2019, the HCPC has adopted the RPS’ competency framework as its standards for all prescribers. If you have a prescribing annotation on the Register, you therefore must meet the competencies set out in the Framework in your prescribing practice.

It is really important this document reflects prescribing practices across all the professions that use this document – including HCPC registrants.

About the consultation

The framework has been reviewed and refreshed, in collaboration with a multi-expert group on behalf of all prescribing practitioners in the UK. You can read more about the detailed changes on the RPS website page here.

The RPS want your views on these updates and are asking prescribers to complete their confidential survey to ensure the update framework is clear, relevant, current and fit for purpose.

The survey should only take 15 minutes to complete and will run from Friday 26 March until Friday 7 May 2021.

Who might this affect?

Anyone on our Register who has a supplementary or independent prescribing annotation may be affected, these are:

  • Paramedics
  • Physiotherapists
  • Radiographers
  • Chiropodists/ Podiatrists
  • Dietitians

How will it affect the HCPC’s standards?

The HCPC has worked with the RPS on the development of the revised competency framework.

We will be responding to the consultation in support of the proposals and will be working with the RPS on the final framework.

We are also working with the RPS and the NMC – who have also adopted the framework as their prescribing standards – to support implementation of the new framework. This will be phased to allow education programmes and registrants the time to adopt the new framework.

We will publish more information about our implementation plans after the consultation has closed and we have been able to see the final version of the new competency framework.

What you need to do

The RPS are asking those who want to respond to the consultation to read the consultation document, complete the consultation questions either via the online survey or in a Word document and send your responses to consultations@rpharms.com

You can find all the necessary documents, online survey and contact details on the RPS website page
